Revived will also include some of her biggest hits, but will feature much heavier production along the lines of a live album. Revisited was produced by Dave Cobb, and is a more acoustic, stripped-down record which “I’m a Survivor” will appear on. It will be in the form of a triple album called Revived, Remixed, Revisited, which is essentially a fresh spin on a greatest hits album.

In partnership with Nashville Songwriters Association International, the "Story Behind the Song" video interview series features Nashville-connected songwriters discussing one of their compositions. She said, “That was my song that got me through that moment of time.” And you know, that's why we do this. She found out I wrote, “I'm a Survivor” and she literally cried. So she moved from Africa to America and raised them two kids by herself. My mother-in-law's caretaker is from Africa and she was married, like an arranged marriage, about the time (the song) came out, and her ex-husband poured hot oil on her daughter and she was burnt all over. … I was telling Shelby this story earlier today. And I think this song was full of integrity. And I've also tried to write songs with integrity. I know Shelby has too, but I've always tried to be a man of integrity. The television show was pretty popular, but I always felt like, survivors were more than what was kind of being seen as survivors during that time. Then we said, “Do you ever wonder if somebody that was born prematurely, is their whole life out of sync because they came too early? So everything's out of time? And then Phillip being Phillip, (came up with) “I was born three months too early. It was Phillip's idea… thinking about the “Survivor” television show, it was just kind of one of those things that he kinda mentioned. Phillip, I don't know if you remember how we started this idea. Did y'all think of Reba? Because I don't know who else could have recorded this song. I’m in.”īH: You can write a song for an artist, but they almost never record it, unless you write it with them. I'm rusty, but I had a Ray Charles cut.” I'm like, “Okay, he's had a Ray Charles cut. He said, “Man, I'm fixing to leave (Lyric Street) and A&R.” He said, “I wanna write. It was pitched, heard, held, cut.īH: I mean, that's a meant-to-be thing if I've ever heard one. She wanted me to leave it in (producer) Tony Brown's mailbox – and that was on Sunday –because Monday they were going to cut it. Reba was doing “Annie, Get Your Gun” on Broadway. And when Cindy found out it was off hold, she wanted to send it to Reba. I went home and Sherry, my wife, was at the house with Cindy Owen. It was on hold for Martina (McBride) for a little bit, and came off hold.

SK: Let me interrupt for a second, because this really is bizarre. And I was thinking, “Who is this?” I thought it was some of my family back in Alabama messing with me. And I hear this real country voice on the other end telling me that she'd heard the song, and it was Reba.

I remember answering, and I didn't have good service. I think Shelby talked to her too, but I was on a fishing boat with my brother at Kentucky Lake back when we had flip phones.
